THE WALKER COUNTY CHILDREN’S ADVOCACY CENTER

Despite the critical role we play in the justice system, many individuals in our community have never even heard of a Children’s Advocacy Center or realized the vital resource available right in their own backyard. We are launching this blog to bridge that gap and explain exactly how the CAC serves as a sanctuary for healing and a hub for justice. Historically, the process of investigating child abuse was often as traumatizing as the abuse itself; a child might disclose their experience to a friend, only to be forced to retell that painful story to a teacher, then a counselor, then a principal, followed by an officer, their parents, the Department of Human Resources, and a medical professional. This “system-first” approach forced the child to relive their trauma over and over for the sake of different agencies. Today, Child Advocacy Centers have fundamentally changed that dynamic by bringing the system to the child rather than dragging the child through the system. Now, a child can come to the CAC building where all investigative agencies gather in one place, allowing the child to tell their story just once to a single trained professional in a neutral, safe environment without being questioned by multiple agencies over and over again.

In 2012, District Attorney Bill Adair witnessed a gap in our local justice system that he simply could not ignore. Following a traumatic event involving a child, it became clear that Walker County lacked the immediate, specialized resources needed to protect its most vulnerable citizens; at the time, no one in the county was professionally trained to conduct forensic interviews or preserve a child victim’s statement. To get that child the help they deserved, our leaders were forced to look to a neighboring county’s advocacy center to find a trained professional. This moment proved the need was undeniable, and the work began immediately as Bill Adair began networking and securing the promises necessary to establish a sanctuary for children right here at home.

The Walker County Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) was officially established in 2012 and began providing direct services to children and families in 2013. Since opening our doors, we have served approximately 2,000 new child victims for forensic interviews, provided thousands of individuals with victim and family advocacy, and conducted thousands of specialized counseling sessions. While these figures represent a significant impact, we are acutely aware that they are only a fraction of the reality. The vast majority of victims never disclose their trauma, and for those who do, the average age of disclosure is often not until they are in their 50s. These statistics drive our mission to provide a safe, neutral environment where children feel empowered to tell their stories today rather than decades from now.

Our success is built upon a multidisciplinary team approach to investigations, ensuring that child victims receive comprehensive services under one roof. We work in close coordination with law enforcement, the Department of Human Resources, mental and medical health professionals, the District Attorney’s Office, forensic interviewers, and advocates. This collaborative model allows the investigations team to observe forensic interviews from a separate viewing area not visible to the child, ensuring that information is gathered accurately while the child remains in a comfortable, non-threatening setting. By bringing these diverse experts together, we can offer a streamlined path toward justice and healing.

Beyond the initial investigation, the CAC is dedicated to the long-term well-being of every family that walks through our doors. Our core services include forensic interviewing by trained professionals, victim and family advocacy, and specialized mental health treatment through Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. We also provide court advocacy to support families through the legal process and ensure they receive appropriate referrals for additional needs. In addition, we are committed to educating our community on the prevention and intervention of child abuse and child maltreatment. The Walker County CAC stands as a testament to what a community can achieve when it decides that its children deserve the very best care, delivered with expertise and compassion right here at home.

We will break apart each aspect of the CAC services in individual blog posts to help you better understand the services provided by your local children’s advocacy center.
